  1. CNES ends 2019 with final flourish as ANGELS and EyeSat are sent into orbit

    The two satellites have departed Earth from the Guiana Space Centre atop a Soyuz launcher and are now operating over our heads. ANGELS, built by Hemeria with support from CNES, is the first French commercial nanosatellite to enter service, and EyeSat was developed through CNES’s JANUS1 student cubesat project.

    Wednesday 18 December, Soyuz accomplished a flawless launch from the Guiana Space Centre (CSG), Europe’s spaceport in Kourou, orbiting COSMO-SkyMed Second Generation for the Italian space agency ASI and the Italian Ministry of Defence, CHEOPS for the European Space Agency (ESA), ANGELS and EyeSat for CNES, and OPS-SAT for operator Tyvak on behalf of ESA. Soyuz thus accomplished its 23rd mission from the CSG, its third launch in 2019 and the ninth flight of the year in all from the base.

    Tuesday 17 December, Soyuz will lift off for the 23rd time from the Guiana Space Centre (CSG), Europe’s spaceport in French Guiana, carrying COSMO-SkyMed Second Generation for the Italian space agency ASI and the Italian Ministry of Defence, CHEOPS for the European Space Agency (ESA), ANGELS and EyeSat for CNES, and OPS-SAT for operator Tyvak on behalf of ESA. This will be Soyuz’s third launch from the CSG in 2019 and the ninth flight of the year in all from the base.

    The ISAE-SUPAERO aeronautics and space institute, supported by CNES’s JANUS student nanosatellite programme and in partnership with the French national aerospace research ONERA, has designed EntrySat, the first CubeSat1 dedicated to studying atmospheric re-entry of orbital debris.The satellite will be launched aboard a Cygnus cargo vehicle to the International Space Station (ISS) by an Antares NG-11 vehicle on 17 April from NASA’s Wallops Flight Facility, Virginia, and will separate from the station a few weeks later.
